“Note that .my DOMAIN REGISTRY stipulates the need for Administrative Contact, Billing Contact and Technical Contact. For details on job responsiblity, go to the .my DOMAIN REGISTRY FAQ. However, in the case of personal domain name, the Registrant is the same as the Administrative Contact.”

I couldn’t find the job responsibility page. Anyway, to summarize

Admin Contact: Person who manage the name. This person is appointed by the owner of the domain name. In a way, this person take care of the ownership but do not own the domain name. Registrant owns the name.

Technical Contact: Person who manage the DNS servers associated with the domain name. This person should have control over the DNS servers and able to do changes to the pointing (editing the zonefile) on request.

Billing Contact: Responsible to bill and collect payment from the Registrant, or the owner of the domain name. Billing contact should remind registrant to renew a name.

–

I talked to MyNIC today. We discussed about the fact that most Admin Contact, as well as Billing and Technical Contacts do not really understand their scope of work.

Admin Contact for .com..my must be the employee of the Registrant. In most of the cases, the Admin Contact listed do not have control over the ownership. In short, the appointed Admin Contact has no ideas of how to safe guard the domain name.

For more domain name job responsibility discussion, please email pin@1.com.my

The revamp of Sime Darby Healthcare‘s website is clearly one of the successful one! The goal is clear and undoubtedly, they know what visitors want!

I have never visit their website in my life until I need to make an appointment with one of the doctor. The Clinic Schedule is practical and all what I want at that moment. The form is easy to locate and the schedule records are dynamically updated.

Clinic Schedule

Having 100 pages of content in your website and ask your visitors to pick what they want is not the solution.

Having 1 page of content with all information of what your visitors want is the King.

Well done, Ximnet, the web developer for this project!

Too often, everyone think that subscribing a payment gateway service is like another hit -or-miss decision which one can afford to be missed.

To name a few, you have local third party payment companies, namely Netbuilder, iPay88, Commerce Payment… international third party payment companies including Paypal, WorldPay, blar… blar… Then, comes Merchant Account provided by banks including Maybank, Public Bank, Citibank…

So, which one to go with?

Yeah, people start to compare about what is the setup fee, commissions, per transaction charge, withdrawal fee, integration, currency support…

Yet, online transaction is far more complicated than this!

Chargebank handling, extended security measures, payment refund, payment gateway uptime are features which will only be appreciated after you have got your hand dirty.

Payment gateway deals with money, your money. Disputes can happen and how your payment gateway companies will deal with it?

Reporting is another thing. You need a good one to work with the accounting of your company.

So, the one and only name you need to remember is, Paypal!

It was a quiet Friday afternoon in Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Kelana Jaya. There is a desktop there which the very kind & friendly staff there is trying their best to show my dad how to use the system. That is how I was called to assist him on the spot.

The portal to apply oil palm related license

I do not wish to list out one by one the problems of the system. Not my intention to discourage the effort of this agency to go online! Instead, I really admire the decision made and I believe it can be improved and it is a good move for sure!

My dad is the owner of an oil palm nursery which make him the user of this system. The system requires an email address during sign up and my dad has none.

What is the goal of this system?

YouTube, Gmail, Picasa, Blogspot and all other range of Google products are hard to resist. They are comprehensive, easy to use yet free! Meanwhile, Google runs the world best advertising programs – Google Adwords.

The smart engine behind the Google Adwords, marks it as one of the most targeted advertising channel out beat many other conventional medias. The revenue derived from this channel provides unlimited fund to continue improving Google products. The more people use their product, it provides even more eyeball for Adword.

“They are many newspaper publishers, but no one is controlling all”

Even one can make it, new media channels will be launched, such as Blogs.

Google creates content, but that can never cover all. Wikipedia, Facebook, WordPress – examples of other content providers who share the Internet eyeball with Adwords. Don’t forget, new media will be introduced too.

At one point, Google will find it hard to cover the ever rising cost of maintaining those free applications.

One day, Google search will be so accurate that it is no longer a search, but answers. Gmail is near to perfect after years of Beta too, who knows.

Remember the targeted ads appeared on the right column of search result? If Google aims to perfect the search, isn’t it is contradict to have sponsored listing which may or may not related to your search?

If Gmail is so-called the best email tools, isn’t that it should have no ads? Or, if YouTube is your personal video channel to show only video you want to watch, why bother to include the embossed ads?

Finally, Google will charge users to use their tools or services. Just like how Microsoft Words stayed in our PC for the past 10 years. From Paid to Free, and it would be one day going into Paid again.. and another player will emerge – with a new set of free services :)

What do you think?

Sales lawyer, in this case, meeting customers and work like a marketing guys. A lawyer is selling their knowledge in legal matters. Trapped in traffic, or spending time looking for customers, does not sounds a good conversion for them!

The word Disable is confusing. Someone must be smart enough to know that it says ‘Click to Disable’. To me, it’s more like showing the current status of that particular item, which is a NOT in this case!

The word Disable is an action, who knows?

Radio button is good for a user to make a choice, telling you what they want in the quickest way. But, many designers fail to go further with it. Fields not required should be hidden from users than showing it.

Return box is not relevant to One Way user

The action to choose from dropdown should directly translated as ‘Users are interested in that particular item’. What if someone change the dropdown without ticking the checkbox?

The check box is redundant!

Maybank2U team has never learn the lesson. Apparently, the case reported today is nothing new but a classic ‘phishing’ case which Maybank2U are well aware of it. Clearly enough, the poor victim was not able to tell if a website is real or fake. His login information was intercepted and someone just transferred RM4,935 from his bank account illegally.

I have recently attended their private launch of the new Maybank2U 2.0 website. If only Maybank2U knows not all users are techy, and their new website doesn’t seem to address to this problem at all!

A common problem for many System Interface Designers is, they believe everyone knows hitting Ctrl+V is Paste, and no one will choose the Paste function from File menu.

The old Maybank website

Look at the amount of information, links and pictures in this page. Yes, this is catchy in a bad way- distracting users’ attention on important notice and security alert. Choice is not good, in this case.

This might easily help everyone (Including Mr. Ctrl+V and Mr. File) to fight phishing. This cost less to develop, no consultancy fee to pay (I’m happy to share), and most importantly, to convince more people to use Maybank2U!

A product in its final stage limits the way users think. The almost-done Maybank2U website will sure get lot of useful feedbacks, but I bet not much on the fundamental which is crucial to get the magic numbers mentioned by Shareza.

Just look at my earlier post on Jo-jo's Challenge. We have collected about 33 feedbacks for just one form, extracted from an online hotel booking website.

This is the current website of Maybank2U. The Maybank2U team done a great work to build this from scracth. It is not easy, especially when you're dealing with large number of users and important data. The decision to revamp come at the right time. If the old website was built to attract more visitors (during those days when it was new), the revamped version should have focused in the conversion rate or meeting goals. In short, to increase Maybank's revenue and to decrease Maybank's operating cost!

I managed to take this picture showing some important practices during the presentation. Too bad, the pages in the new website are still fighting for space :)

Allow me to quickly go through some of my humble and nothing-new feedbacks. I would love to jump to the end of the post which I am going to propose and touch the painful part of the change - The Fundamental!

Don't be surprised, many visitors can not tell the difference between the two pictures in quick.

I couldn't find the login box in the main page like what we have in Paypal? A touching personalization can be redundant. Quick math, if you will to login 100 times to Maybank2U in your lifetime, that means the New User link will appear 99 times to you unused. Not just that, you have just forced someone to make 99 decisions of not clicking on that particular link. Don’t make a choice.

Most often, user experience has a lot to do with the Contact us form. Imagine, it serves as the best time and place where you can turn someone's experience of using your website better. They can be your best friend who promote the website for you, not of fancy technology but some little nice experience. A good form receives fewer support request, saving operational cost greatly. I have reviewed the Contact us form of Alliance Bank in the past, check it out. An example of Contact us form in good use.

Sign up form - one of the most important page where visitors are converted into Maybank2U users. Yet, too many options, and I wonder why the online method should not be given priority as like the big button in WordPress. Yet, this is not much different from the first version. This explains why 1,500 pages are way too difficult to focus your bullet (budget and time) on. Probably that answer to Yowchuan's question on how much is the cost of revamp during the preview launch today.

I would love to have location map if this is not too much of work :)

The Fundamental Feedback?

My Maybank2Me directs me to a secure page with big login button. There is a clear instruction to tell people how to ensure they are landed in the non-phishing page. I don't have to choose if I am a new user, the system will do this dirty job for me. My online system reminds me if there is a recurring payment to make such as rental and the list go on...

The rest of information such as banking, credit card, lifestyles updates, promotions, sign up instructions and contact us form are separated from the online banking system.

Who knows, I could have one version for people like my dad? Lite, easy to use, and probably they could belong to the last group of users who will continue 'supporting' the physical banks :)

Keep it up, Maybank2U Team!

I must be kidding. Yes, I don't have a Maybank2U account.

Some related posts I have written in the past. They have a lot to do with UI.

"People would have said they want a faster horse (Henry Ford, 1903)"

You would probably get the same answer if you are asking someone before a car was invented. The Maybank2U website has about 1 million active users now. This is the best real data one can have when come to revamping a website. You have all the answers, from percentage of people who never change their password, to average amount of transaction in details.

I was skeptical especially when there are too much user involvement during the user experience studies. Various test are included but this can eventually turn out to be a faster horse. Yes, everyone fancy about uploading and sharing videos, but no one will tell the founder of YouTube to build it that way.

When asked about the estimation of the increase of conversion after the revamp, I was told by Shareza that they are expecting the current active users to grow from 1 million to 1.5 millions in three months. In layman terms, this means an additional 500 thousands users will become active with the new design, if number of visitors remains the same (or 50% increase of visitors while conversion rate remains).

Few groups of potential active users come into my mind, including my dad who is computer illiterate, locals who speak just Bahasa, Mandarin or Tamil, international users who are not speaking English, my brother-in-law who want everything from font-size to input box big... Not to mention myself who just want to get my transaction done with shortest possible click, doesn't really care if it is PBEOnline or Mayban2U.

The new revamp reduces number of pages from 3,000 to 1,500, which is still way too much to digest. Why not 10 or 20 pages? To me, Google search engines has only 2 pages: main page and search result page. It is about getting things done.

Few groups of potential active users come into my mind, including my dad who is computer illiterate, locals who speak just Bahasa, Mandarin or Tamil, international users who are not speaking English, my brother-in-law who want everything from font-size to input box big… Not to mention myself who just want to get my transaction done with shortest possible click, doesn’t really care if it is PBEOnline or Mayban2U.

The new revamp reduces number of pages from 3,000 to 1,500, which is still way too much to digest. Why not 10 or 20 pages? To me, Google search engines has only 2 pages: main page and search result page. It is about getting things done.

According to Ahmad Shareza, the head of Virtual Banking, the new Maybank2U is now officially under private launch to invited people. I was lucky to be invited by Yowchuan to attend the preview in Marc Residence this evening.

Together with Maybank2U team and their partners, they are some famous bloggers who are invited to try out the system. As for two of us, probably thanks to Yowchuan's post on Maybank downtime earlier.

I was thinking that is would be some serious user experience testing there but it turns out to be too-good food and goodies bag which I'm less interested :)

One good thing about inviting bloggers are, you get your press releases out faster than any other conventional media:

Perhaps, Iit is a hard decision to replace official website with a Blog. Therefore, setting the business Blog sounds like more tolerate and 'unofficial' alternative.

Just look at Stemlife & Stemlife Blog or Malaysia Airlines and its Malaysia Airlines Blog, this growing trend means you will see more business owner adding Blog to their main menu in the website.

Google treat everyone as personal. That is why you are not asked to enter your company information. See, one can work for more than one company, or even own a few companies. How many times you are asked to answer your income range or your age or your area of interest in those drop down forms? It is, in another words of saying - your age and income will never change. Or, what is the point of asking?

Well, behind business Blog, I'm sure you can find someone, or a group of people who is managing it. They are real people and the business Blog is actually personal to them, so as the official website :)

I must admit that I'm the fan of National Geographic magazine. My earlier NI collection mainly on those featuring animals. Well, everything changed when I am getting older (older, serious...), I'd love to read more on places and people with different cultures. It was no more Savana lion's picture with teeth dig into a wild buffalo's back that attracted me now :)

I usually bought those outdated NI magazines, most of them dated 1980 - 2000, cost about RM8 each. I would consider them my little weekend retreat, besides cycling! Then it comes, last weekend. I was in Cineleisure looking for a gift for Shirley, our Langkawi writer. You won't believe the number of NI magazines spread in 4 10-metre long table, full of them. They are really old magaizines, anything between 192x to 193x. You name it!

I picked one - an oldest I can find there! It wasn't RM8 each, but RM80!

One of the reason I have decided to buy one, is to find out how advertisement looks like in those days. Here, some of the interesting advertisement I wish to share,

In the dead of night? Who would has think of that this is an advertisment from Bell Company. Yes, the one who invented Telephone. I couldn't find any telephone numbers in all advertisements, perhaps this explains telephone still remains as for emergency use only.

New joys for Radio - What happen if they have an IPOP?

Colgate, still a dental cream

Sedan for $1,075??

Camera?

In sweden, online buyers are so used to getting the product first before paying. Well, most of their e-commerce websites support two payment options, Faktura and credit card. Faktura remains as the preferred one where the owners value the return rights of their customer more than anything. Invoices are sent together with the products. Buyers will have to just pay the invoice through their local bank account.

Another thing I might it interesting is the introduction of additional fee for a greener-packaging method. Yes, paying extra to have the website owner wrap your product in a more eco-friendly way. It costs 10 kr extra, but makes huge difference. So, opt in for MILJO next time :)

It takes you 2-minutes to listen to a real customer about how should the form looks like. I bet almost all customers will prefer a simple one than above.

1. Instruction kills creativity, makes people think less. The person who built this form is probably just want to get work done than how this form can help those who use it.

2. Change is pain. The original paper-based form could look exactly like this online form. Why bother to change it?

3. Users are passive. The form is viewed by countless visitors, yet no change has been done. Design of a building is done first than its construction. When the building is done, it is often too late to change, and suggestions are limited to what is already there.

When it comes to annual event, what is the best domain to be used? By including the year 2008 after the domain (yes, someone may already registered wcit.com), it is therefore a must to register a new name wcit2009 next year. New domain means you have to start all over again and build your ranking in search engine again! To solve this, if you are using a Blog, you can create categories like 2007, 2008, 2009, etc and assign your post respectively.

Can you tell me what is the word of the picture above?

I just had a very interesting talk to three students (Chekey, Chailee and Ryanne), having their internship training here. Well, they are asked to think of the main page interface for one of the new system we want to develop soon. Through they are new, but I would say that they perform really very well in this task!

When come to interface, it is not best programmer or best designer can do the best job. It is one who can think from many different angles, making less choice for your visitors. Best possible, a Physiologist!

A lot of time, the intuitiveness of a system is achieved by understanding how human reacts and interpretes a design, I found this very interesting! Bill gates invented the best intuitive interface at his time, he deserves what he get today!

The domain pizza.com was acquired by an annonymous bidder for 2.6 million dollars after 14 years. The owner, Chris Clark bought the name pizza.com in 1994, never thought that this can fetch to such a higher price, after he saw an opportunity of the acquisition for vodka.com!

Buying electronic components online is not something new. RS Malaysia, one of the pioneer in Malaysia who setup their first online store many years ago, are improving from time to time. I am happy to see that as they gradually gather users feedback and improve the website.

Just one thing, I received their email newsletter today. Sadly, I can't find any link from the email to their website. In Analytics, we refer clicks from email newsletter as Referral. With the link properly implemented, it can give us a better ideas of how effective is this channel in bringing traffic to your site.

Recently, I was looking for the latest Redhat Enterprise 5, to be used for our new projects. Redhat Enterprise comes with their technical support (yearly subscription) which we hardly use, but that is what you are paying for, not the software.

I emailed to one of the Redhat official office in Malaysia, never get a reply (we are kinda used with this, it happens to AirAsia too). Leaving no choice, I tried my luck emailing Magnifix Malaysia. I bought Redhat Linux 3 from them before, 7 years back during my University days.

The good people in Magnifix replied me and advise me how to go around with this. They even introduce the alternative CentOS platform which is compiled from the same Redhat Enterprise source. In a short 2 days, I have received 3 emails from their team...

All these are not going through any complicated helpdesk system which dump you with ticket number to scare you off than helping you... but genuine people who has the passion in their work, and trying to help! Bravo, Magnifix!
